Week 27

Wow, this week sure seems to have gone by fast! I feel like I just wrote my last email yesterday. It's good have fast weeks rather than slow ones I guess, it feels like we get more done that way.

This week started off awesome because we got a chance to play some touch rugby with the district last P-day which made me want to actually tackle something, haha. It was awesome because right after that we all had dinner together as well at member's home! It's was district unity day I guess.

Tuesday was cool because we had a really good time building a bunk bed for some former investigators. We were hoping to finally catch them home and got lucky because the wife is actually 9 months pregnant, so there was no escape! The husband was home as well so we got to go in and chat with them for a bit. When were finishing up we asked if we could help them with anything else and the wife pointed out a bunk bed box that had just been dropped off that morning. We jumped up and built that sucker in an hour. It was really good for us to have something like that to do to re-build (haha, see what I did there?) the relationship of trust there. We hope they start taking lessons again now, but we do have a few obstacles to jump. The main one being that they think they were married in the temple without being baptized, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

We kinda ran around the rest of the day trying to find some less-active members and actually finding a lot of success. We stopped by an enterna-gator's home and ended up giving 3 blessings in a row! It was pretty unexpected and now I'm going to need some more oil to bless but it was a cool teaching opportunity. The family that lives there only really has one active member, the mother and the rest are all non-members, a full family of about 12 people . The man who's been investigating pretty much just needs to marry the mother and then all would be just great.

The next morning while we were out running and working our huge muscles our district leader asked us if we wanted any "spud-nuts". He said they're his version of doughnuts that poor missionaries like us can make. We ran back to their apartment with them and found 5 heaping plates of the stuff! I resisted the devil's fruit and kept up with my workouts while they polished off 3 of the plates. We got one to take home though and I was weak and ended up eating some. They were pretty good actually, he managed to glaze them and everything somehow.

We had a good day that day because of the 6-month training both me and my companion went to. It's crazy, we've been out in the mission for almost the exact same amount of time, he's only got 10 days on me. It was a great training and President Weidman told us something pretty important. He said after 6 months all missionaries seem to either plateau or grow exponentially. His goal is to have us all do the latter, and so he continued to give one of the most awesome trainings ever. He simply put it this way "Whatever you get out of this training today, I want you to change in some way for the better." I'm trying my hardest now to do exactly that.

We went home and had a very busy night with dinner and meeting a new investigator that was moving into our area. Elder Parsons and Eddy found her originally but she was moving so we've got her in our sights now. She says her best friend is Mormon and that she really wants to learn more, but we're not sure if she was just saying that to get some extra hands to move. We're hopeful as always and we're going to get her dunked I'm pretty sure.

The next day was had a lesson with a poor girl that we are teaching. She has stage two breast cancer, a possible tumor in her neck, 3 kids to worry about, school and no husband. The poor girl really needs the gospel in her life and we tried to teach a lesson but there wasn't really a good way to go about it. She was far too depressed so we left her some uplifting scriptures and a promise that God will help her if she comes to church. We pray for her a lot.

We also met with a part-member family that I mentioned last week. The parents were only there this time but we had good lesson none the less. We didn't really know what to talk about before hand but it was given to us when she asked us whether ghosts and spirits exist. We dove into some scriptures and the end of the matter is that we have an FHE setup with them for Friday where we are going to dedicate their home. It's such a good opportunity to teach such a big family. There are about 17-20 living in the big home and only about 4 are members as far as we can gather, so there will be many baptisms soon :).

The next day was a day a every missionary dreams about. We had a day full of solid appointments. Literally we did not have an hour that was not filled with someone being visited or taught. We did nothing but bike and teach that day. When one appointment did fall through, we were guided to a man who used to take missionary discussion but lives outside our area and taught him for an hour. It was that good. We stopped at another appointment and they didn't answer the door, so we went to Mickey D's for a drink of water. While we sat down for a 10 min break a man named Simon said "Mind if I sit with you Elders?" within about 3 seconds. He's a social worker for the disabled and he was super cool. He was there to pick up his wife but came an hour early for some reason he said. I think it was no coincidence. It was nothing short of the hand of God. It's important to keep fairly spiritually in-tune now because these awesome stories keep happening and if we're not, we miss them.

Saturday was really cool. We had a lesson with a good investigator and then an elder's quorum barbeque! I guess I should have been more excited for the lesson but the call of smoked meat was really strong, haha. It was a great turnout and the aforementioned eternal-gator was there. Elder Parsons kept making jokes about going up and asking him when he would finally tie the knot but I didn't think he would actually do it. He says he's getting married in June. I was a bit shocked that it actually worked but it was good to hear. I probably won't be here to see him finally enter the church but a soul brought to Christ is good anyway. It's not really important who really finishes it off.

Yesterday was pretty cool mainly for the fact that we had 5 investigators at church! 5! Can you believe that? We were blessed by going from 1 to 5 in one week. We didn't even think 3 of them would show up for the next month! They are all from that huge part-member family and we'll be visiting there a lot so we have high hopes for them.

I guess that's kind of it for this week. I've still been studying hard-core on the character of the Christ and I have learned a lot there. If any of you want to I would suggest reading "Jesus the Christ" and the Book of Mormon specifically taking notes about who Christ is. Not just what he is but what he would be like if you were actually to walk up, shake his hand and sit down and talk with him. It's mind blowing what you can really learn from those two books about him. I think I will read the D&C as well to learn what I can from there but so far it has been very rewarding. I hope you all have a good week!

Week 26- Still in CA

Day 178... The locals are starting to accept me as one of their own here. It's thrilling really, all their strange customs and appearances are almost second nature now. It is strange I will be in a different place after all I have learned here.... haha

Anyway this week has been pretty crazy. One of the most thrilling yet slow and painful yet. I know that doesn't make much sense but it will by the end of this I think. The first reason I find it so crazy is that I've been out six months now! Isn't that something, half a year spent on the mission and only 1/4 done. I've heard time flies after the first six though but most people who have told me that haven't served two different missions, so we'll see what life brings our way.

Anyway the first thing I want to write about is zone conference, usually one of the most inspiring things you can go through in life. It was a great conference, don't get me wrong, but getting there was no fun at all. We had to get up at 5 and catch a 2 hour bus ride to Santa Monica to get there on time. It wasn't fun, but what made it worse is that we found out we didn't have to do that! We got a call about half way there from the zone leaders telling us we actually had a ride set up for 7! They had sent out a voice mail the night before but our phone tends to not like their messages so we never seem to get them. So that was a bit frustrating and we were too tired to really enjoy the conference and that is a bit sad. The good news is I met a Sister that is actually going to my mission out here! Her name is Sister Greeene and she seems cool but I guess the only thing to really report is that we are both going to PAN mission.

On a brighter note though we did have a really cool miracle happen a bit later in that day. We have been meeting with this girl Alejandra who is going through a rough patch in her life and we texted us asking if we might be able to find her some cheap diapers for her son. After a bit of talking we decided it was worth it to go buy her a 5 dollar pack to help her out. After we got there she walked in right after us and we actually got to hand them to her and talk a bit. She was having a hard day and her son was really sick so we offered to give him a blessing. After a quick lesson on what a blessing was we gave one to her son and asked if there was anything else we could do for her. The response actually came from her cousin, requesting we give Alejandra a blessing of comfort and council. It was cool to see the faith in us two boys in white shirts and ties who she had just met these past few days. We haven't heard back from her except that her son actually went to the hospital, so we pray they are okay. After that we also picked up a new investigator in her building so we know that we were inspired of the Lord to buy some diapers, haha.

The next day I went on splits with the new DL's companion, Elder Eddy. He's pretty cool, he's a soccer player from the mothership (Utah) and we spent a good day together. The highlight was went we met the member daughter of one of our investigators. We were out working when I realized we had biked to the wrong area and I was about to turn back when I got a little whisper to call him. As we did so he started off making excuses as to why we could visit but then he said that she was coming over, so we asked to meet her. Little did he know "It's a trap!" haha! We got there and met her and she got our vibe really quick. We told her about his baptismal date and almost immediately started bearing testimony of the power of baptism and her own conversion. We have her number now so we can coordinate with her. We're setting up a visitor center tour with her and him so we hope that'll help him move along faster. We also have a Priesthood BBQ later that day, so he should be all but swamped in the church then, MU-HAHAHA!

Yet another cool story happened Friday. We were out hunting down some former investigators that we had lost touch with when I got another little whisper to go try and find this old referral. We had tried her house several times when I was with Elder Phelps and we actually found out we still needed her apartment number, but I figured I should try to listen to the spirit, so we went. As we got near the hotel there was a lady standing out side sweeping the gutter (don't ask, I don't get it either) and we started talking to her. She was pretty interested and actually said she would want to come to church some time, which of course is like cat nip to a missionary. We asked her name and it turned out to be the woman we were looking for!  It was super cool and we stopped by later and gave her a BoM later too. She didn't come to church but we know the Lord wanted us to talk to her for some reason. We have high hopes for future lessons.

We had dinner that night with an older couple named the Whites. Sis. White is a convert of about 5 years who still has a lot of confusion about some stuff but is super nice. They took us to this restaurant called Philippe's which the careful observer will find IhS OmUmT OgF TkHsE MgIfSfSqImOfN. But it's okay, it was for dinner so President says we won't be sent home or anything, haha. Anyway, while we were there was this girl that ran up to us and said "Hi missionaries, I'm Cheyenne!" She was super pumped to meet us and actually asked to get a picture with us. Her mom came over and took it and guess what, she's served in the Missouri Independence mission, my home mission! It was super cool and fun to meet them but that wasn't the end of it. I actually found one of my investigators from Redando there! If you remember a Fran Oremsbee (sorry if I butchered that Fran) she was there too! We caught up and had a grand time, it was really one heck of a night.

The last thing I want to write about is being sick. It's terrible as a missionary. Especially on bike, when you have a big area, with many hills, and 5 appointments that day so you can't stay in. It was one of the worst days of my life honestly. I said many-a-prayer begging for strength to finish the  day and I got it. I swear I felt God's hand pushing me up some of those hills. I honestly don't hardly remember anything from these past few days till last night. We got a golden investigator out of it so I'm happy enough for us. We also got an awesome meal at a member's house last night with the district so that was pretty cool. I know that God had some reason to test me that day and I hope I did well enough and passed.

Anyway, that's pretty much it for this week! You all have a good one and I'll write more next week!

Week 25

Dang, you know you're getting too used to being a missionary when you have to check which week you sent last time to know which one this is! Can you believe I'm pretty much done with 1/4 of my mission? And that for almost the rest of it I won't even be in the same place or speaking the same language? It's so cool to be able to say I served a mission in two places!

Anyway in news this week my companion is actually Elder Watts. President Weidman actually said he woke up in the middle of the night and made the change Monday. He said that something was just not right about it, so he changed it. Elder Watts is a good ol' boy from Texas, making us quite the pair. Two Elders from the bible belt, who would have guessed it? Anyway, I'll have a picture with him for next week but I think you will all be surprised how similar we actually look, haha.

Anyway, on the subject of transfers, President Weidman told the funniest story. He said he was at the airport picking up the Greenies (I can call them that now) and he stopped to talk to the woman in the parking booth. He told her about our church and introduced himself and asked her about her faith. Then the worst happened, she was a Jehovah's Witness (dun dun dun!). But President Weidman just replied "Really? That's cool, we have a lot of ex-Jehovah's Witnesses in our church". That's being bold right there, haha. President Weidman is the man. After he told the woman to take care of his wife in the next car because she is the most important person to him on earth. He then promptly got in trouble because she told us that he forgot to paid her parking.

After transfers we had to actually go to a bike shop because some jer... I mean beloved child of God slashed my tires. I had to get the tube and the actual tread replaced so this week I will need to be frugal in shopping. The man was pretty cool though and we got a better price than I expected. We spent the day out at appointments and contacting as always but there was nothing really to report.

Wednesday was a very long day indeed. Sister Pumphry needed help building what I like to call "The Wall of Jericho". It's really a terrace for her garden but we didn't really get the idea so we spent half the day building and rebuilding it until it was right, and then the rest of the day carrying all the cement back down to where had got it from. Lots of heavy lifting and hard work but we got the job done finally. We hope not to spend so much time there this week.

Thursday was really weird actually. First of all it actually rained! What?! In LA? I think it's rained maybe 3 times since I got here for about 15 mins but that day it came down with a vengeance all day! It was great because there is actually a serious draught out here and the saints have been praying and fasting for rain, so it was a miracle really. We actually had breakfast that morning with some members named the Spellers who are some of our greatest friends here in downtown. We have actually eaten there 3 times this week, but on that particular meeting Sister Speller had injured her ankle and needed a blessing. We were happy to help.

When we came back home we decided to knock out weekly planning before our next appointment which was a late lunch with one sister Randolph. She made us some good BBQ chicken that actually made me a bit homesick. I know as soon as I get back to MO I'm gonna need me some good BBQ, haha. We took off into the cold rain again to try and find some member who had just moved in but to no avail. Since we were right by Union station we took the subway home and from there we got a ride to correlation. After that we actually had dinner with Brother Belcher too, so we had all 3 meals covered that day! So we were, full, wet and cold that day.

Friday we had our first district meeting with Elder Parsons as district leader. He actually makes a great leader I think. He reminds me a lot of my wraslin' coach back home in a lot of ways. He did a great job re-vamping the beaten-to-death old district meeting and gave a great training on contacting 20 people a day. That number actually comes from a challenge extended from Elder M. Russle Ballard and since we have begun it we've seen miracles. That day was actually really good because we actually fulfilled that challenge and got 2 new investigators! One was a referral but I'll take it. We really have started to get a very full schedule here since we have been working hard.

Saturday was great and I wish I could tell you all the awesome work that got done that day but it would take another hour to type all that out. Suffice to say we had a lessons all day and barely got anything done. I'll tell this one funny story though:

While we were meeting with one of our investigators at a place called ---- where he lives.  His friend decided to listen in to the lesson. We were out in the open at a park-like place so there was room enough to spread out, so he stole Elder Watts from me and they began talking. I was talking to Jesse about how important church was but in the background we suddenly heard the friend start shouting like an old school preacher. He came over to me and read a section from Ether and asked some questions and then told me I was a good, smart man in his preacher voice. Then he walked around preaching out of the fresh copy of the Book of Mormon he had just been given by us and talked to random people walking around. It was pretty funny and as we left the lesson I shook his hand and told him it was nice to meet him, to which he replied "You're a good bunch here. My name is Akeem, it's a slave name". Haha, oh the people you meet in LA....

Yesterday was pretty cool too. We went to church and had a good time there and there was actually a baptism too, but we couldn't stay because of an appointment. I hear it was really good though. Our appointment fell through actually so we walked around talking to people, well at least I did anyway since we were in a Spanish part of town. After that we had a dinner with the Spellers again and they made a TON of spaghetti. I accepted the challenge but only downed about 2 plates. There was still enough to feed all of us again after we had eaten, haha. They had brought a friend over and we all watched a church movie called Legacy. It's kinda of out dated but not that bad. I don't really like the man who plays Joseph in it but it was still good.

That pretty much wraps up my week. I don't really have any mind blowing revelations to share but I will next week for sure. Elder Watts had this talk called "The Mortal Christ" which has been mind blowing so far and I can't wait to finish it and study more on it. I will get back to you all on that next week though so we can have some uplifting thoughts there. Love you all! Have a good week and feed your missionaries!

Week 24 B

Dear Family--

Hello everyone! How are you all doing today? I'm good enough now.  I had a bit of a depressive bout last night but I am back to normal now.  This week has been pretty great because the area is starting to turn around.  We have been working hard and have finally gotten some investigators!

One of the is Lenny.  He lives in a place called ----.  It is a homeless shelter with some requirements to get in so it is a cut above the rest.  It's pretty nice actually and we met with him and he accepted a baptismal date!  Not only that, we also have a standing appointment with him every week at 10:30 a.m. every Saturday that he is  having them announce to everyone.  Needless to say it is a super positive situation, we hope to help a lot of people there.  I'll probably mention this in the e-mail too, but I'm just really excited about it.

Something really cool that happened this week was we read a talk called " Do Things That Make A Difference".  It is a great talk by M. Russell Ballard.  He extended a challenge to everyone in that talk that I really want to take to heart.  The challenge is yo write one thing every night that you are doing that you know is holding you back and then commit to simply quit.  It can be something big or small, it just has to be one step forward.  I've been writing one every night in my journal.
www.lds.org/ensign/1983/06/do-things-that-make-a-difference?lang=eng

The second part of the challenge is to write another thing that you will do to improve yourself.  So it is a two part challenge, one part to quit and the other part is to replace the action with.  It's pretty great I think and I hope to  use this to improve myself everyday.  He also said " don't wait to improve yourself ".  I guess I will come back like an apostle if I really do this well, ha ha.

Ok, time for the real stuff.  Going on a mission is no easy thing to do.  I walked into it really light-heartedly and I wish I hadn't.  It will be the craziest, most fun, most trying, most spiritual and hardest thing you do, bar none.  It really is a big choice, but luckily I am already here so I can give you some advice:

Let's look at the scriptures, shall we?

D&C 4:1-3-- Who is called to the work and what do we serve Him with?
D&C 11:21-- What do we need to do before we preach?
Alma 37: 36-37-- This scripture tells us how we act as missionaries.
Also, the first line tells us how to get direction.

Some scriptures about being a missionary:
Alma 38: 1-12
Alma 42: 31
Moroni 9:6
Jacob 1:9
D&C 4
D&C 11

Just some guides to look through to help.  The main thing to do is pray and be worthy.

One final piece of advice.  Don't put your mission off.  There will always be a reason not to go if you look for one.  So I guess the consensus is it is good as soon as you feel ready and not a second later.

Don't worry if you feel like your testimony is weak because if you ALWAYS turn to God, He will help.  Never doubt your faith before your doubts.  I forgot what talk it was, but Elder Uchtdorf talked about not doubting faith.  He used a story where a man says " Yeah Lord, I believe, help thou  my unbelief."

Um, everything else was kind of unnecessary or I will write it in the other e-mail.  Except our biscuits, I forgot about those! We've been trying to get the recipe just right for about a week and we finally did it! We just guessed the ingredients and measurements literally.  We just kept  mixing and matching til we got it right.  It only took us two tries too, ha ha! We call them "manna biscuits " because we joke about receiving revelation to get the recipe right.

Anyway, that's all for now.  I love you all and hope you have a good week!

Week 24

Hey there everyone! It's been a good enough week out here (as always) but I'll start with the big news first. Transfers are here! I'll be getting my ninth companion tomorrow, staying in this area, with Elder Wald. He's a Chinese speaking Elder which will be fun because everyone speaks Korean here, ha ha. That also means that he probably hasn't ridden a bike in a while so we'll be going a bit slower but that is okay, I look forward to working with him.

Anyway, this week started off pretty good on Tuesday when we had a bit of a hit list to do. There a lot of people we needed to contact so we spent most the day ridding around to different addresses. We went to go find one member who had dropped of the map and when we got to his address we found a big house there with a brand new gate. It looked pretty missionary proof but we waited a bit and were rewarded with a funny little Korean man in poofy shorts checking if he was home. God must have really wanted us to get in there. We found out that he was home and that he was actually not supposed to be there and was home early. We were actually running late and if we had been there the time we planned to be we would have missed him. Coincidence? I think not. We had a great meeting with him and he actually was at church this Sunday, so a job well done there.

The next day was kind of wasted due to some unfortunate mishaps. We visited Anthony, a blind less active man, and shared some talks with him from general conference. He likes to joke around a lot so we actually started by playing for him a J. Golden Kimble talk. If you have never heard him I would recommend looking into it for a good laugh. He's known as the "Swearing Seventy" for good reason. He tends to tell a lot of funny stories as well. Anyway Anthony loved the talk and then we actually shared "Safety for the Soul" by Jefferey R. Holland, an amazing talk about the Book of Mormon.

After that we spent the night waiting "ten minutes" til the Sister who was feeding us dinner got home. It took her about an hour and a half really,  but we were able to get a bit of yard work done in that time so it wasn't a complete waste. We had a good dinner and then turned in for the night.

The next day was pretty interesting. We spent it at sister Pumphry's home for lunch and then dashed to our next appointment with a less active, Sister R. She is a great woman who tends to waiver in her commitment every now and a again but not that we've gotten in with her we'll make sure that never happens. We had a joint lesson with the senior couple in the ward, The Hurley's, and it went great, especially since we got a dinner out of it. They taught about the importance of reading the Book of Mormon and I bore some testimony of it and spirit was strong. She said she really felt the need to read again and that she would try to every day from now on.

We ran by and picked up dinner from some members after that and then went to the church to hurry and eat it before correlation. The problem was that the gate to the church was locked and we didn't have a key. I assumed a manly pose and told Elder Phelps to wait for a second outside the gate. It's a bit hard to explain but basically it is a two story parking garage with a gate on the bottom entrances, but there was a foreseeable way to climb to the second level. Mustering all of the 0 ninja training I had I climbed over and let me ol' comp in. It was pretty funny to see his reaction to it all. We got through just fine but then the church itself was locked! So we figured we could eat outside and wait for everyone to show up for correlation.

After an hour no one had still shown up though. What we didn't know is that it had actually been canceled and that our phone hadn't been receiving texts for the last 3 days. So we called on Elder Parsons (who is DL now btw) and Perez for answers. They told us they would come get us since the meeting was canceled. As we put our bikes on the rack to go home I forgot to take off my helmet. It did stay on till about the last 100 yards of the journey though. A man told us once we had parked that it had fallen off and as we ran to get it some guy ran it over! Good thing we had a spare, but it doesn't fit quite right. We had dinner with them and called it a night after that.

The next day we met with Cookie, a new investigator we met about 2 weeks ago. But before we got the meeting, as we were locking up our bikes, two police men pulled up. I was wondering if he had locked up on an illegal sign of some sort but turns out one of them was LDS too. They told us to be careful around these parts and that we could get mugged. Poor man didn't know the area I just transferred from I guess, ha ha. Plus we have the Lord's protection on our side. We took his advise though, we got in and out pretty fast .

When we got in the Cookie she immediately took us around and introduced us to the management of the apartment complex and then a tour. She was very bubbly and up-beat the entire time and seemed a bit like a strange cookie (ha ha, you see what I did there?). We sat down in a community room for the meeting and were not at all prepared for what was about to come next. She requested us to read the creation story in Genesis and we accepted but convinced her to read the one in Moses instead. She was okay with that and as we began reading she started going a bit off the deep end. She takes her beliefs from a whole lot of other religions and kind of mashes them together you see. She does believe that Jesus is her savoir and that the Godhead are three beings so that was good. From there out though it was just weird. She had all these ideas and acronyms and all sorts of weird stuff, but she loved our lesson and wants to be baptized. We think it's not a matter of accepting the truth, it's a matter of realizing it's the only truth for her.

We had a cool dinner the next day. We ate it with a part member family that is unmarried actually, and that's only where the beginning is. It's the S/W family and it's quite a nut to crack. The father is the member and 1). Plays softball every Sunday 2). Doesn't want to marry the woman he is living with because he made some promise to his last wife and 3). Sister Solis is his in-home caretaker. They have a daughter too, Jenifer who is 28. They are plenty nice and all but it's crazy. I figure I'll just have to be very bold and loving with them. The mother wants to be baptized but needs to be married first.... it's a mess really as you can see. It was a good dinner though and a sweet spirit dwells in that home.

To close up I want to talk a little about faith. As I am now at my 6 month mark I've been thinking a lot about it. In the Book of Mormon we learn that Nephi the son of Nephi during the time of Christ's coming to America converted literally the entire Laminite nation to the gospel. All of them. It says this was done because of their faith as well. I was a bit saddened by this. Obviously I don't think I have the faith of a prophet yet, but wasn't my faith enough to bring at least a few more people to God? I felt like I needed to study it out and so I did. I've found a few things in the process.

God does give us the abilities to work miracles. He had given His priesthood to use on this earth for all to be blessed and that power does work wonders at times. But God is a God of order and someone who wants us to become all that we can. To let us work miracles all the time wouldn't really make us grow more would it? He wants us to use the gifts we've been given of him to work "ordinary miracles" as I now call them. Miracles that happen more because you were there at the right time, in the right place and acted in the right way. Not some grand moving of mountains or parting of seas. This way we build our faith in Him and perform the miracles that need to be done.

So to accomplish these miracles what do we need to do? We need to realize the gifts we have been given of God, we need to heed his voice and be worthy of his spirit. We may not always FEEL like we've just performed a miracle but we will know that we did what God would do if he were there at that time. We can take confidence in the fact that we acted righteously in his name.

I love you all and hope you have a great week.
